Simplicity.

Use the right amount of pictures

However, the expressive power of an image means any negative connotations are magnified as well. Make sure that your e-learning localization utilizes images that can be understood in the same way to people of all cultures.

If you’re not sure, take a look at the graphic library associated with the target culture, you may find a more culturally appropriate substitution for your original image.

Easily replicated video and images

Voice-over may be an integral part of your international e-learning program but this is where the highest costs for localization are found.

Subtitles translation is much more cost effective so this option should be considered to avoid voice-over costs for each target language.

If audio is essential to your program, try simplifying the dialogue or use animations instead of video so that the voice-over doesn’t have to sync to an actor’s mouth.

Stick to a few authoring tools

There are many great authoring tools out there for the creation of highly customized e-learning content; however, when it comes time to translate and localize this content, variety can pose a huge logistical problem.

For example, if your content was created using four separate authoring tools and you need your content translated into twenty different languages, you will likely need to find linguists and designers who can work with all four authoring tools, in each of the twenty languages.

Picking one or two programs for content creation will ensure that the technical aspects of translation are simple and straightforward.

Lighten your load

Your international elearning localization process should be designed with the user’s average connection speed in mind.

Try to minimize size wherever possible. For example, compressing video files to 12 shots per second, an imperceptible difference to the naked eye, will make your program much lighter.

If your e-learning is too “heavy” and response time from page to page is extremely slow, the user may lose interest. This problem is magnified in places where there are only slow connection options.

On the other hand, a “light-weight”, simplified, well-translated e-learning program is sure to dazzle audiences around the globe and keep your clients coming back for more.
